Choosing A Path
You Can Do Anything—But You Can't Do Everything
It’s often said, “You can do anything.” But the quieter part, the part people don’t like to say is, You can’t do everything.
Every “yes” takes you away from something else. Add too many things, and everything gets watered down. Your attention, your energy, and your results.
It’s like annotating a book: highlight everything, and you’ve really highlighted nothing.
Choices have to be made. And if you don’t make them, the world will.
But there’s an enormous amount of power in a clear choice. When you commit, unseen worlds start shifting in your favor…That is, unless you change your mind and muddy the waters.
I know both sides of this all too well—firm choices and muddy waters.
For years, I felt like I was standing at a fork in the road, except this fork had many paths moving out in every direction. They all looked like good options. I’d take a few steps down one, then return, wondering if another might be better.
I also got distracted watching others happily walking their path and wondering, Should I be on that one instead?
In all this time, a few things stayed with me.
Goals I couldn’t let go of.
Ideas I kept returning to.
Callings I couldn’t quite put down.
Looking back, I think I always knew which path was mine. I just needed to explore the others a bit first.
It reminds me of the Robert Frost poem—The Road Not Taken.
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth;🌿Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about the same,🌿And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.Oh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on to way,I doubted if I should ever come back.🌿I shall be telling this with a sighSomewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.
That poem has been whispering to me over the years.
And it’s true: way leads on to way.
If that’s not happening, maybe you're standing still—or like me, running back and forth, never making real progress in any direction.
But something happened, and I finally made a choice—a real, definitive choice.
Every year, I choose a word to guide my year. It might sound like a small thing, but it has taught me more than I would have ever expected. Each word starts with a clear intention, yet it always unfolds differently than I imagined.
Last year, my word was Focus. I thought it meant staying on task and completing my goals.
But what it really gave me… was clarity. The path came into focus. And all the others gently faded into the background.
Now that I’ve walked far enough down that path, I’m starting to see something else: The opportunities showing up now aren’t distractions. They’re supportive. Aligned. They fit.
I believe this is what happens when you make a clear decision and move forward with it: The universe starts rearranging itself to support your direction.
As Florence Scovel Shinn writes, there is wisdom in making a clear choice, holding the vision, and trusting the process. Even when the outcome looks different than you imagined.
Because the divine selection (that which was meant for you) is often better than anything you could’ve dreamed up.
In my community this week I shared a journaling prompt:
“Where in my life am I avoiding making a decision — and what is that costing me (emotionally, energetically, or practically)?”
So, what’s the decision you’ve been avoiding?
Here are some things happening in my world:
The Living The Game of Life community is open. We have our first community connection call (available to every tier) this coming Monday, July 7th at 1pm Central. Our community connection calls are an opportunity for reflection, real talk, and gentle support — no pressure, just presence. Come as you are. Leave a little lighter.
Be on the lookout for the Living The Game of Life podcast in early August, where I’ll be interviewing inspiring women and sharing real-life stories of transformation, intuition, manifestation, and the spiritual principles inspired by Florence Scovel Shinn’s The Game of Life and How to Play It.
And of course, The 100th Anniversary Edition of The Game of Life and How To Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn with additional stories, integration exercises and journaling prompts will be released in late September!
✨ Feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or like you’ve lost yourself under the weight of all your responsibilities?
I work one-on-one with women in midlife who are ready to release old emotional patterns, reconnect with their true selves, and create a life that actually feels good. If you're craving clarity, peace, and a deeper sense of purpose, I’d love to support you.
